A Brief History of First Assembly of God

Approximately in 1920 a group of poeple began worshipping together in a rented building on Cayuga Street in this city of Ithaca. In 1924 they built a small church at 521 1/2 South Meadow Street in Ithaca. They called their church the Calvary Full Gospel Church.

In 1939, they became affiliated witht he General Council of the ASsemblies of God in Springfield, Missouri. They maintained its name until the time of incoropoation on October 30, 1945. when it became the ASsembly of God Church subsequently changed to the present name of First Assembly of God Church.

The congregation continued to worship at 521 1/2 South Meadow St. until November 1952 when the present facilities at 520 West Seneca St. were purchased for $15,000.00. Added to this purchase price was the cost of the contractor to renovate the building from the existing children's home to a church. This cost was $15,000.00 for the contractor fees plus additional materials purchased and installed by the congregation themselves at a cost of approximately $8,000.00. This total indebtedness of some $38,000.00 was liquidated by the time the mortgage was pain in 1966.

In 2000, the church moved into a brand new facility at 197 Bostwick Road.  The dedication service was held on April 2nd.  Presently, First Assembly has children and youth programs, a vibrant worship service reaching an average of 250 attendees each week.  Our midweek small groups are reaching over 100 adults and over 20 children and teenagers.

We are proud to be an active servant to the community of Ithaca and will continue to do so for many years to come.
